Early Care and Learning Program

Smart Start is a state-licensed, fee-based, full-service developmental preschool and child-care program. The program operates year round, Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Tri-Rivers Center in West Point. Full- and part-time services are available. For the current fees, please click Smart Start Tuition Schedule, 2011.

Smart Start provides services to infants through preschool-aged children. USDA approved breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks are provided.

In addition to a planned preschool curriculum, children enjoy field trips, library excursions, and a variety of enhancement activities such as visits from the Virginia Living Museum, creative movement classes, and storytelling with special community members.  Daily outdoor playtime is provided in safe, age-appropriate play areas.

Caring, well-trained staff provide a safe, nurturing environment and maintain daily communication with parents. Early literacy, social/emotional growth and development, and good health and nutrition habits are emphasized.

Parents are encouraged to visit classrooms, have lunch with their children, and accompany them on field trips.  "Family Fun Nights" are planned monthly to offer tips and workshops in parenting.  During these family nights, parents and children can participate together in activities and have dinner.
